Garmin Etrex Venture GPS

Hiking and Geocaching

Once you get the geocaching fever, it's hard not to go out. You get to a point where you just have to go geocaching!

Recently we moved to Tripp, South Dakota, and was looking for something to do as we were riding around on our motorcycle.

We decided to go to Cabela's and check out the GPS's they had. After looking at them all we picked out the Garmin Venture because of it's size, and it is water resistant. We didn't know that once we started using it on the way home, that it only had a basic map and it was hard to navigate just using the main streets.

To get a more detailed map you had to buy some maps from Garmin's website we found out.

Anyway, we got on geocaching.com and found some caches near us and punched in the coordinates, but when we looked at the location, it showed us like it was in the middle of nowhere because the highway wasn't even on the GPS map.

Then we used our Microsoft Streets and Trips to get a little better idea of where the caches were hidden. So, after comparing the 2 locations we knew approximately where it was located, and went to find them.

Would we recommend the Garmin Etrex Venture for geocaching? Not unless you are going to purchase more detailed maps.
